The Heavy Heart and the Spiritual Hangover

“And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.” Luke 21:34

Unlocking the Original Greek

Our Lord begins His warning not with an outward command to watch the skies, but with an inward command to guard the soul: “And take heed to yourselves…”

“Take heed” (Greek: προσέχετε / prosechete):

This is not a passive suggestion; it is an active, dynamic nautical term! In ancient seafaring,  prosechete meant to “hold a ship toward” a specific destination, or to actively steer away from dangerous, hidden rocks. Jesus is standing at the helm of our lives, shouting, “Grab hold of the rudder of your soul!“

Do not let your life drift aimlessly onto the jagged rocks of this world’s distractions!”

1. The Captain’s Call

“Imagine yourself standing on the deck of a mighty vessel. 

The wind is howling, the waves are crashing against the hull and hidden just beneath the frothing surface lie razor sharp rocks that could splinter your ship into a thousand pieces.

Now, picture Jesus; not as a passenger in the cabin, not as someone sleeping in the hold; He standing at the helm, His hands gripping the wheel, His eyes fixed on the horizon, and then He turns to you and shouts, ‘Prosechete!

Grab hold of the rudder of your soul!’

What does it feel like to realize that Jesus is not merely suggesting that you pay attention, He is commanding you to actively, and aggressively steer your life?     

How does that change the way you hear the words ‘take heed’ in Scripture?”

2. The Danger of Drift

“The sea does not ask a ship for permission to carry it off course.

A vessel can be seaworthy, it can be beautiful, it can even be brand-new; but if the captain falls asleep at the wheel, the current will gently, silently, and almost imperceptibly pull that ship toward the jagged rocks. You won’t even hear the danger. You’ll just wake up to the sound of timber cracking against stone.

Now, I want to ask you.

What are the ‘hidden rocks’ in your life right now; the distractions, the comforts, the busyness; that look harmless on the surface but could quietly shipwreck your soul if you simply drift?            

And be honest now: have you taken your hands off the rudder?”

3. The Rudder of the Soul

“The Greek word prosechete is not passive. It is not ‘take a seat and casually observe.’ It is the kind of word a sea captain screams to his crew when the storm blinds them and the rocks are close enough to touch.

It means to hold the ship toward its destination with white-knuckled determination. Also, It means to steer away from destruction with every fiber of your being.

If your soul has a rudder, what are you holding onto right now that keeps you pointed toward Jesus? Is it prayer? Is it the Word? Is it fellowship?

And here is the sharper question; What has quietly pried your fingers loose from that rudder,

and what will it take for you to grab hold again?”

4. The Aimless Life

“There is an old saying among sailors: ‘A ship without a destination will be tossed by every wave.’ It will go nowhere, or worse; it will go wherever the wind and the enemy want it to go.

The person who does not prosechete; who does not actively hold their course; is not standing still. They are drifting. And drifting is never neutral;            drifting always ends in wreckage.

In what areas of your life have you stopped steering and started drifting? Your thought life? Your relationships? Your devotion to Christ? And if Jesus is standing at the helm of your life right now, shouting for you to take hold; will you let go of the distractions and grip the wheel again?”

5. The World’s Deceptive Current

“The world does not always attack you head-on. Sometimes it doesn’t need to. It simply pulls you; slowly, gently, almost sweetly; with the current of entertainment, the undertow of approval, the tide of busyness, the waves of worry. Before you know it, you are miles from where you started and you didn’t even feel yourself moving.

What ‘current’ in your life right now is subtly pulling you away from the presence of God? Is it your phone? Your relationships? Your ambitions? Your fears? And more importantly; what would it look like for you today to dig your heels in,      grab the rudder of your soul, and say, not one inch further. I am steering back toward Jesus’?”

6. The Helmsman’s Voice

“Jesus does not whisper ‘take heed’ from a distance. He does not politely suggest that you might consider paying attention. He stands at the helm of your life; the place where direction is set and destinies are decided;            He shouts with authority, ‘Prosechete! Grab hold!

Do not let your life drift aimlessly onto the jagged rocks of this world’s distractions!’

If you closed your eyes right now and imagined Jesus standing at the helm of your life, looking you in the eyes with love and urgency; what do you think He would say to you about the direction you are currently heading?

Is your ship pointed toward the harbor of His heart, or is it drifting toward the rocks?”
