TRANSCRIPT

If you brought your Holy Scriptures today, turn with me to Proverbs 3, verses 5 and 6. And while you’re turning there, I want you to lean in and listen to me with the ears of your spirit.

I’m not standing behind this sacred pulpit today as a cold, distant scholar from behind some polished desk in an academic library. Oh, no. I stand before you today as a shepherd whose heart is overflowing with the tender mercies of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I come to you as a spiritual father, as a brother, as your fellow pilgrim on this glorious, sunlit highway of faith. I come as one who has knelt at the altar in the midnight hours, who has wept tear-stained prayers over these pages, and who has been utterly ravished by the radiant beauty and Holiness of God!

My heart has a burning fire in it today! A fire shut up in my bones! My supreme prayer for this congregation on this November morning is that the eternal Word of God would not merely inform your intellect, but that it would consume your entire heart. I pray that the Holy Ghost would blow right across the pages of your Bible today until those ancient letters catch fire and turn into a living, roaring flame in your soul!

Look with me at these gold-refined words of King James Scripture; words many of you memorized as children in Sunday School, but words that Heaven is opening up anew to us today:

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Ah, beloved, listen to me! These are not just sweet, poetic verses to print on a needlepoint pillow or stick on a refrigerator magnet. These two verses are a divine invitation! They are a royal summons from the King of kings! They are a sacred doorway into a life of supernatural rest and invincible spiritual authority.

Hidden beneath the surface of our English translation lies a goldmine of ancient Hebrew depths, radiant Greek nuances, and a golden thread of redemption that leads us straight to the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ. But hear me carefully today: Proverbs 3:5–6 is not a passive hammock for lazy Christians to rest in. It is Heaven’s blueprint for total surrender, and it is the marching order for the soldiers of the Cross!

I. A Glimpse of Solomon’s World and the Terror of the Wilderness

[Pastor leans over the pulpit, voice lowering with deep, tender intimacy]

Let the Holy Spirit carry your mind back in time today. Step with me across three thousand years of history, right into the breathtaking city of Jerusalem during the golden reign of King Solomon.

Picture it, church: The Great Temple sitting atop Mount Zion, gleaming like snow in the Judean sunlight. The rich fragrance of frankincense and burning sweet spices drifting off the altar through the mountain breeze. Ambassadors from the ends of the earth traveling hundreds of miles just to hear the words of the monarch who sat upon a throne carved of pure ivory and overlaid with finest gold.

When the young men gathered in the courts of Solomon, they were attending a school of divine wisdom. In the Hebrew tongue, that wisdom was called Chokhmah. Chokhmah wasn’t dull, ivory-tower philosophy. Chokhmah was the magnificent, Holy Ghost art of living skillfully before the face of Almighty God! It was knowing how to navigate a treacherous world without losing your soul.

While the pagan nations surrounding Israel relied on astrologers, sorcerers, and human cleverness, King Solomon stood up in the royal court and shouted the foundational truth of the universe:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge!” (Proverbs 1:7).

Do you hear the intimacy in that voice? It’s a tender father pleading with his child: “My son, my daughter, listen to my words. Do not walk in your own cleverness. Trust the Lord! Walk in His ways!” That same Father’s voice is echoing through this sanctuary today, calling to every man, woman, and child in this building.

[Pounding the pulpit gently with his palm]

Now ask yourself: Why did Solomon use the words “path” and “way”?

To the ancient Hebrew listener, a path was not a smooth asphalt road like Interstate 80 out here today. To them, a path meant a dangerous, winding track through the ruthless Judean wilderness!

Picture a caravan attempting to navigate that desert terrain. The midday sun is brutal, burning down without mercy. The terrain is jagged and unstable. There are sudden ravines, crumbling shale cliffs, flash floods in the dry valleys, and bloodthirsty bandits lurking in the shadows of the rocks. In that environment, a traveler who trusted his own inner sense of direction; a traveler who said, “I think I know a shortcut; I’ll trust my own instincts”; was a dead man! He would wander into the sunbaked waste and perish.

He needed a Master Guide! He needed a Forerunner who knew every rock, every ridge, every hidden pitfall, and who could cut a level track through impossible territory.

Hear the Holy Ghost today, church! Human understanding is like a cracked, rotten wooden staff. The moment you put your full weight on it in the wilderness of life; it snaps and pierces your hand! But when you throw down your broken staff and surrender to Yahweh, He becomes your Pioneer! He becomes your Highway-Builder! He levels the mountains of opposition, He fills in the valleys of despair, He clears out the hidden traps of the enemy, and He leads you safely home!

Is there anybody here in the wilderness today? God is declaring to you: “Stop relying on your cracked staff! I am clearing a highway in your desert!”

II. Ancient Voices Echoing Through the Ages

[Pastor flips pages in his pulpit Bible]

Oh, the Holy Ghost has left us such a rich trail of historical witnesses! Look at how the ancient manuscripts testify to this exact truth.

Think of the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in the caves of Qumran. In manuscripts like 4QProvᵃ, preserve word-for-word the text of Proverbs 3 that we hold in our hands today. The Essene community living in those desert caves understood that human reasoning apart from God was utterly corrupted. They wrote that believers must trust in what they called the Raz Nihyeh; the divine mystery of God’s sovereign plan. They knew that God’s guidance wasn’t just a pleasant feeling; it was a supernatural clearing of the path that snatched the righteous right out of the enemy’s disguised traps!

And when the Jewish people returned from exile speaking Aramaic, they translated the Hebrew Scriptures into the synagogue paraphrases known as the Aramaic Targums. Listen to how the Targum translates Proverbs 3:5:

“Trust in the (Memra d’YHVH) the Word of the Lord; with all your heart, and do not rely upon your own cleverness.”

[Voice rises with passionate joy]

Do you see it, saints?! Centuries before the angel announced the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, the ancient synagogue taught that the object of our total trust must be the (Memra) living Word of God! And four hundred years later, the Apostle John picked up his quill and wrote: “In the beginning was the Word (Memra/Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God!”

Jesus Christ is the Memra incarnate! To trust in the Lord with all your heart is not to trust in an abstract theological idea; it is to throw your entire life into the open arms of Jesus Christ, the Living Word!

Even the ancient rabbis in the Babylonian Talmud (Berakhot 63a) asked a question that should cut us all to the quick today. They asked:

“What is the single, concise passage of Scripture upon which all the essential bodies of the Torah depend?”

Do you know what passage those ancient rabbis chose? They didn’t pick a complex ceremonial law. They pointed straight to Proverbs 3:6: “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”

They taught that when a believer acknowledges God in the most ordinary acts of life; when you eat, when you trade at the market, when you plow your field, when you go to work on Monday morning; you sanctify the Holy Name of God, and He publicly straightens your path before the eyes of the world!

The Apocryphal wisdom of Sirach warns us: “Seek not out the things that are too hard for thee… for many are deceived by their own vain opinion.” And the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs screams through the hallway of time that self-reliance is the absolute root of human ruin! From Adam and Eve in the garden down to this very hour, the tragedy of fallen man has always been the same: turning away from the clear Word of God to lean on our own human intellect!

III. The Radiant Gems of Hebrew and Greek

[Pastor halts, looking intently into the eyes of the congregation]

Let’s go down into the linguistic goldmine today, beloved. Look at these pristine Hebrew words that the Holy Spirit breathed onto Solomon’s parchment.

First, look at that word TRUST: Bāṭaḥ.

Bāṭaḥ does not mean a casual, intellectual nod of agreement. It doesn’t mean saying, “Oh yes, I believe God exists.” No! In ancient Hebrew, bāṭaḥ literally means to throw yourself flat on your face upon a solid surface with all your body weight!

Picture a battle-weary, exhausted warrior who collapses face-first onto an unshakeable bedrock ledge, giving his entire weight over to the rock. Or picture a tiny newborn infant sleeping in absolute, undisturbed peace upon its mother’s chest. To bāṭaḥ in Yahweh means you completely burn your bridges! It means you throw away your human backup plans! You fling your health, your marriage, your children, your finances, and your eternal soul right into the arms of the God who cannot lie and cannot fail!

Second, look at HEART: Lēḇ.

In our modern 1987 culture, we think the heart is just the organ of romantic feelings and emotions. But to the Hebrew mind, the lēḇ was the absolute mission control center of the entire human being! It was the seat of the mind, the will, the intellect, the memory, and the conscience. When God demands, “Trust in the Lord with ALL thine heart,” He is saying: “I want control of your mind! I want control of your checkbook! I want to control your career decisions! I want to control your secret thoughts! No divided loyalty! No holding back a secret room in the house of your life!”

Third, look at LEAN: Šā’an.

Šā’an means to brace yourself against something for support, like an injured man leaning his entire weight on a crutch or a staff. But God warns: Lean not on your own Bînāh (your own human analytical reasoning). Why? Because human bînāh only sees what the physical eyes can see. Human reasoning looks at circumstances through the tiny keyhole of finite time. Divine wisdom sees the end from the beginning! If you lean on human reasoning in times of trial, it will snap like a dry cane and drive wooden splinters deep into your heart!

Fourth, look at ACKNOWLEDGE: Yāḏa’.

Oh, this word is intoxicatingly beautiful! Yāḏa’ is not a formal bow across a room. Yāḏa’ is the Hebrew word for deep, intimate, experiential knowing; the very word used when Genesis records that Adam knew (yāḏa’) Eve his wife. God is saying: “I don’t want your Sunday morning formalities! I want you to know Me intimately in every room of your life! Bring Me into your furnace of suffering! Bring Me into your marital struggles! Bring Me into your business deals!”

And look at what God promises when you yāḏa’ Him: He will DIRECT (Yāšar) your paths!

Yāšar is an intensive verb. It means to clear away the jungle, to break down the granite boulders, to bulldoze the sand dunes, and to cut a perfectly smooth, straight, unobstructed highway!

[Preacher steps out from behind the pulpit, speaking with sudden intensity]

And listen to what the ancient Greek Septuagint (LXX) adds to this! Where the Hebrew says, “Lean not to your own understanding,” the Greek Septuagint translates it as:

“Do not be puffed up upon your own wisdom!”

The Holy Ghost reveals that self-reliance isn’t just a mistake; it is the sin of spiritual PRIDE! It is a clay pot looking up at the Master Potter and saying, “I know better than You how to run my life!”

And when the Septuagint translates “He shall direct thy paths,” it uses the rare Greek verb Orthotomeō! Ortho means “straight.” Tomeō means “to cut.” It means to slice a laser-straight road straight through solid rock or timber!

And where else does that exact word Orthotomeō show up in the New Testament? In 2 Timothy 2:15, where Paul tells young Timothy:

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (Orthotomeō; cutting a straight line through) the word of truth!”

Hallelujah! Do you see the harmony of the Ghost?! When you acknowledge Jesus in all your ways, He cuts a straight path through the wilderness of your life! And when you open the Holy Scriptures, the Spirit empowers you to cut a straight line through error and preach the uncompromised truth of God!

IV. Jesus: The Highway and the Ultimate Model of Surrender

[Soft, solemn tone]

If you want to see Proverbs 3:5–6 lived out in bloody, glorious reality, don’t just look at King Solomon’s golden throne. Look at the Son of God kneeling in the dark shadows of the Garden of Gethsemane!

There was the Lord Jesus Christ; the eternal Wisdom of God made flesh (1 Corinthians 1:24). In Him were hidden all the infinite treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:3). Yet, in His human flesh, as He stared into the bitter, terrifying cup of divine wrath against human sin, every physical instinct of self-preservation screamed in agony.

Did Jesus lean on human understanding? Did He orchestrate a worldly exit strategy?

No, church! He fell flat on His face on the cold soil of Gethsemane; he bāṭaḥ’d on the Father! Sweat mixed with great drops of blood poured from His brow as He prayed the ultimate prayer of Proverbs 3:5–6:

“Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless, NOT MY WILL, BUT THINE, BE DONE!” (Luke 22:42).

Jesus refused to lean on human understanding! He acknowledged the Father in the darkest night of human history, and the Father directed His path right through the shame of the Cross, right through the darkness of Golgotha, right out of the shattered tomb on the third day, and straight up to the right hand of the Majesty on High!

The whole Bible sings this same divine symphony:

• Jeremiah 17:5, 7: “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm… Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is!”
• Psalm 37:5: “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”
• Isaiah 40:3–4: “Make straight in the desert a highway for our God… The crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain!”
• Romans 12:16: “Be not wise in your own conceits!”
• James 1:5–6: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God… But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering!”

V. The Battle Cry: Taking Up the Cross and Spiritual Warfare

[The organ swelling slightly; Pastor’s voice shifts from gentle warmth to a resounding, trumpet-like call to arms]

But hear me today, church! This is where so many believers in this modern era have lost their way!

We hear a sermon on Proverbs 3:5–6, and we think God’s guidance is just about picking which suburban neighborhood to buy a house in, or which career promotion to take so we can live comfortable, soft lives! We have developed a lazy, passive, consumer Christianity in America!

Too many churchgoers today have bought into a devilish lie! They think: “Well, I walked down an aisle, I said a little prayer, I got my golden ticket to Heaven, and now I’m just going to cruise along in my comfortable life until the Rapture takes me home!”

THAT IS A LIE FROM THE BOTTOMLESS PIT OF HELL!

[Preacher strikes the pulpit; voice echoing through the rafters]

The Word of God nowhere paints a picture of the Christian life as a luxury cruise liner or a spiritual playground! THIS WORLD IS A BATTLEFIELD!

There is a fierce, cosmic, apocalyptic war raging right now between Heaven and Hell, between the Holy Ghost and the powers of darkness! And right now, Jesus Christ is sounding a trumpet-like BATTLE CRY to every person sitting in these pews!

Hear the words of King Jesus:

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and TAKE UP HIS CROSS DAILY, AND FOLLOW ME!” (Luke 9:23).

Have you considered the cost, church?!

When a man took up a wooden cross beam in the Roman Empire, everybody watching knew one thing: that man was not coming back! He was walking on a one-way trip to execution! Taking up your cross doesn’t mean enduring a mild headache or an annoying relative. Taking up your cross means DYING to your self-will, DYING to your human ambitions, DYING to your pride, and SURRENDERING your life completely to the Commander of the Lord’s Army!

Just like that grand old hymn we sing: “Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus going on before!”

You were born on this earth for one supreme purpose: to fight the battle for the Lord God Almighty!

Listen to your shepherd today: In a time of war, a soldier who refuses to pick up his weapons, a soldier who sits lazily in the trench playing games while the artillery shells are falling, is not “safe”; he becomes an immediate casualty!

And hear this solemn conviction from the Holy Ghost: Those who refuse to put on the spiritual armor, those who become lazy, comfortable, and self-reliant, are turning into spiritual casualties and fatalities in this war between Heaven and Hell!

We must put on the WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD! (Ephesians 6:11–18).

• Strap on the Belt of Truth!
• Buckle on the Breastplate of Righteousness!
• Shod your feet with the Preparation of the Gospel of Peace!
• Take up the Shield of Faith to quench every fiery dart of the devil!
• Put on the Helmet of Salvation!
• And unsheathe the Sword of the Spirit, which is the sharp, two-edged WORD OF GOD!

[Voice drops to intense, burning conviction]

Why are we fighting this battle?

We are not fighting to earn our salvation; Christ already paid the infinite price on Calvary! OUR VICTORY IS ALREADY SECURED! The Blood of Jesus has crushed the head of the serpent! We are not fighting for victory; we are fighting from victory!

But hear me: WE ARE FIGHTING TO SNATCH OTHER SOULS OUT OF THE JAWS OF HELL!

Our call to discipleship is not just making church members; we are making SOLDIERS FOR THE ARMY OF KING JESUS! We are going into the highways and the hedges, into the high schools, into the factories, into the corporate offices, to rescue men and women who are bound by sin, bound by alcohol, bound by greed, bound by despair, and bring them into the kingdom of light!

And listen to the incredible promise of your Captain: All those who stand fast and fight the battle of the Lord will NEVER die! Jesus promised: “He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live!” (John 11:25).

You don’t need to fear loss! You don’t need to fear persecution! You don’t need to fear the future! The only people who suffer ultimate loss are those who refuse to take up the Cross, those who reject the call, those who stay on the wrong side of the battle line!

When you fight for King Jesus, you are on the winning side! You are fighting for others, and you are fighting for that unfading Crown of Life that the Righteous Judge shall give you on that Day!

And then (AND ONLY THEN) shall we enter into our rest!

Rest does not come while the battle is raging in the trenches! Rest comes when the warfare is accomplished! Rest comes when we cross Jordan! Rest comes when we make Heaven our eternal home, drop our swords at the feet of Jesus, and hear Him say: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord!”

VI. The Altar Call and Prayer of Total Surrender

[The organ softly-plays ‘I Surrender All’. The Pastor steps completely down from the platform, standing directly in front of the altar rail]

Look at me, precious ones. Look at your pastor.

The Holy Ghost is moving through this sanctuary right now. I feel His heavy, holy presence in this room.

The Spirit of God is asking you a direct, penetrating question right now: WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN LEANING ON?

• Have you been leaning on your own financial intelligence?
• Have you been leaning on your decades of human experience?
• Have you been leaning on the cold, godless wisdom of this modern world?
• Have you been living as a passive, lazy Christian, sitting on the sidelines of the battle while souls are dying around you?

Hear the tender, powerful voice of your Heavenly Father calling out to you right now: DROP THE BROKEN STAFF!

Drop the staff of self-reliance! Stop carrying the crushing, impossible burden of trying to orchestrate and maneuver your own life! You were never created to carry that weight! You were made to TRUST! You were made to SURRENDER! You were made to STAND AS A SOLDIER OF THE CROSS!

The very instant you acknowledge Him; in your marriage, in your business, in your fear, in your secret addiction, in your uncertainty; God Almighty will step into your story! He will bring Heaven’s spiritual bulldozers to crush every mountain of demonic opposition! He will fill in every valley of depression and fear! He will level your crooked places and make your path straight!

I want every head bowed and every eye closed across this sanctuary.

[Silence in the congregation, save for quiet sniffling and whispering prayers]

If you are here today, and the Holy Ghost is convicting your heart…

If you realize today that you’ve been relying on your own human understanding…

If you realize you’ve been hiding behind a religion of convenience, refusing to take up your cross and fight the battle of the Lord…

I don’t care if you’ve been a member of this church for thirty years or if this is your first time walking through those doors; I want you to step out of your seat right now!

Come on! Leave your pews, walk down these aisles, and come lay your life down at this altar! Step onto the sacred highway of surrender!

[People begin moving to the altar; sounds of footsteps and soft weeping]

Yes, bless God. Come from the balcony. Come from the back rows. Bring your broken staffs and lay them down at the feet of Jesus! Come take up your cross today! Come get equipped with the whole armor of God!

[Wait 30 seconds as the altar fills with weeping believers]

Look at this altar filled with hungry souls! Praise God!

Pray this prayer out loud with me today from the very depths of your spirit; pray it like you mean it before Heaven and Hell:

“O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob! My Heavenly Father, my Savior Jesus Christ, and my glorious Comforter, the Holy Spirit!

I come to You today broken and overwhelmed by the majesty of Your Holy Word! I stand convicted by the Holy Ghost! I confess that I have too often leaned on my own human understanding. I have relied on my cleverness, my strength, and my own fleshly plans.

Forgive me, Lord, for the pride of elevating my finite, human wisdom above Your infinite divine counsel! Forgive me for being a lazy soldier in Your army!

Right now, by faith, I DROP THE BROKEN STAFF of self-reliance! I cast the full weight of my life; my family, my health, my future, my career, my finances, and my heart; flat upon You, the unshakeable Rock of Ages!

I trust in You, Lord Jesus, with ALL MY HEART! Nothing held back! No secret reserves! No backup plans! I TAKE UP MY CROSS TODAY AND I FOLLOW YOU!

In ALL my ways, I acknowledge You! I invite You into every room of my life! Take Your rightful place as supreme Commander over every step I take!

Put Your spiritual armor upon me! Level my mountains, fill my valleys, cut my crooked places straight, and lead me on the supernatural highway of Your divine will!

Fill me afresh right now with the Holy Ghost and FIRE! Give me a passion to win souls and make disciples! I declare that my life belongs to King Jesus! My heart is fixed, my spirit is stayed on You, and my path grows brighter and brighter until the perfect day!

In the mighty, matchless, victorious, and eternally beautiful Name of JESUS CHRIST MY KING.

AMEN AND AMEN!”

[Congregation breaks into loud praise, hands raised, voices glorifying God, organ swelling loudly]

HALLELUJAH! SHOUT UNTO GOD WITH THE VOICE OF TRIUMPH!

Go forth from this sanctuary today as surrendered, battle-ready soldiers of the Living God! Walk on the sacred highway! Trust in the Lord with all your heart! Acknowledge Him in everything and watch Him cut your paths straight!

The glory of the Lord is upon you, the Holy Ghost is your guide, and Jesus Christ is marching with you into victory!

God bless you, beloved! You are dismissed in the power of His Spirit!
