THE SOVEREIGN CALL AND THE BATTLE FOR ETERNITY
A Sermon on the Cost of Discipleship, Spiritual Warfare, and the Eternal Rest
“If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple… So likewise, whosoever he is of you that forsakes not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:26–27, 33 (KJV)
“Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.” 2 Timothy 2:3–4 (KJV)
A BATTLE CRY IN THE WILDERNESS
Church, hear the Word of the Lord today!
A great call is echoing through the corridors of time; a sovereign, piercing battle cry issued by the King of Kings, Jesus Christ.
In Luke chapter 14, scripture tells us that great multitudes accompanied Jesus. Thousands followed Him. They loved the miracles, they cheered at the free bread, and they marveled at His authority. But Jesus was not interested in padded statistics or casual crowds. He turned around and spoke words specifically designed to screen out the half-hearted, to strip away cheap religious devotion, and to sound the alarm: Discipleship is not a comfortable stroll to paradise; it is a summons to cosmic war.
As the classic hymn echoes:
“Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before!”
Yet today, a tragedy has overtaken the modern church. Millions who profess the name of Christ walk through life as if they were on a luxury cruise ship rather than an active combat vessel. They treat salvation as a convenient “ticket to heaven,” put their feet up, and ignore the war raging outside their doors.
I came to tell you today that this world is a battlefield, not a playground. You were not saved merely to be a spectator; you were born and redeemed to fight the battles of the Lord!
I. COUNTING THE COST: DEMOLISHING THE “TICKET TO HEAVEN” FALLACY
Look closely at the language Christ uses in Luke 14. He uses a word rich in meaning: Mathētēs (μαθητής). In the original Greek, a mathētēs is not a passive student taking notes in a lecture hall. A disciple is an apprentice; an adherent who completely assimilates to the Master’s lifestyle, discipline, character, and mission.
Jesus leaves no room for divided loyalties. He uses the sharp Semitic idiom miseō (“hate”), declaring: “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children… yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”
Jesus is not commanding malicious hatred toward our loved ones; He is establishing an absolute hierarchy of allegiance. Your devotion to Jesus must be so supreme, so single-minded, and so total that every earthly bond, every bloodline, and even your own mortal survival looks like second place by comparison!
To drive this truth deep into our conscience, Jesus gave two vivid parables:
- The Tower Builder (Luke 14:28–30): A man who lays a foundation without calculating the cost to finish the building becomes an object of public ridicule.
- The Warring King (Luke 14:31–32): A king going to war with ten thousand men against twenty thousand must sit down first and consult whether he is able to stand the charge.
Notice that Jesus explicitly frames discipleship as entering into warfare! He concludes with an unyielding mandate: “Whosoever he be of you that forsakes not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33).
Exposing the Delusion of “Easy Believes”
This passage demolishes the toxic doctrine of easy believes; the false gospel that tells people, “Just say a short prayer, get your ticket to heaven stamped, and go live your life in selfish comfort.”
Proponents of this delusion promise all the crowns of heaven without any of the duties of the Kingdom. But what does the Word of God say? Matthew 7:21: “Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”
James 2:19–20: “Thou believes that there is one God; thou dust well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?”
Hebrews 5:9: “And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.”
Brothers and sisters, a soldier who enlists in the army cannot remain curled up on his barracks couch while the war rages outside, claiming his enlistment papers guarantee him a victory medal without ever stepping onto the field! Salvation is a covenant relationship that plunges you headlong into the ongoing conflict between the Almighty God and the powers of darkness.
II. THE TRUE MEANING OF “TAKING UP THE CROSS”
We must stop diluting the cross!
In our modern culture, people call a minor physical ache, a difficult boss, or a traffic jam their “cross to bear.” That is a tragic distortion of holy scripture.
To a first-century believer under Roman occupation, the cross; stauros (σταυρός) in Greek, or tzlev (צלב) in Hebrew; was not a gold necklace or a pretty sanctuary ornament. It was an instrument of terrifying, painful, and public execution.
When a condemned man picked up his patibulum; the raw, wooden crossbeam; and marched through the streets of Jerusalem, every onlooker knew one indisputable fact: That man is not coming back.
He was dead to his temporal ambitions. He was dead to his personal rights. He was dead to the opinions of society. He was walking to his death.
When Christ calls out, “Take up your cross, and follow me,” He is demanding:
- Death to Self-Sovereignty: The utter execution of the carnal ego, personal entitlement, and worldly pride.
- Enlistment into Spiritual Execution of Darkness: Accepting that following Christ into the battlefield of this world brings the hatred of the enemy, the hostility of the age, and ultimate sacrifice.
- Unconditional Loyalty Unto Death: As Jesus promised in Matthew 16:25: “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”
III. BORN TO FIGHT THE LORD’S BATTLES
Why were you born? Why did God breathe life into your lungs, and why did Jesus bleed on Calvary to redeem your soul?
You were not brought onto this earth to seek personal luxury, build temporal empires, or pander to the flesh. You were born into a world at war to wage war for the glory of God!
Look at the Old Testament: When Abigail spoke to David in 1 Samuel 25:28, she declared: “My lord fights the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.”
Look at the New Testament: Paul writes to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:3–4: “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warret entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
The Greek word Paul uses for soldier is stratiōtēs (στρατιώτης); a combatant handpicked by the Supreme Commander!
Disciples are Soldiers
When we carry out the Great Commission; when we go forth to preach the Gospel, win lost souls, and make disciples; we are not just recruiting church members; we are training holy warriors!
Every soul won to Jesus Christ is rescued from the fire, delivered from hell’s grip, and armed with spiritual armor to fight for the Almighty.
And listen to this divine truth: We do not march alone. Jesus did not say, “Go into battle and I will watch from afar.” He said, “Take up your cross and follow ME.” Our Commander, the Captain of the Host of the Lord, leads the charge! He walks before us, breaking the force of the enemy.
IV. THE DANGER OF PASSIVITY: CASUALTIES AND FATALITIES
Because this is an active war zone, there is no neutral ground.
Those who refuse to pick up their spiritual weapons, those who refuse to put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6), and those who become lazy or complacent in these last days are not merely sitting out; they are becoming casualties on the battlefield!
Spiritual passivity leads to spiritual fatality. If you do not stand armed with the Sword of the Spirit, the shield of faith, and the helmet of salvation, the fiery darts of the devil will find their mark. Compromise, spiritual apathy, and worldly entanglements leave believers defenseless in a world overrun by evil and corruption.
We must wake up from our slumber! Put on the armor of God! Gird your loins with truth! Lift up the shield of faith!
We must fight for our families, fight for our communities, fight for the lost, and contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints!
V. THE VICTORY IS ALREADY WON: THE CROWN AND THE ETERNAL REST
Now hear the glorious news of the Gospel!
We do not fight for victory; we fight from victory!
When Jesus Christ hung on that cross, shed His holy blood, died, and rose triumphant from the grave on the third day, He disarmed principalities and powers and made a public show of them! The price for our eternal victory has already been fully paid!
No Fear of Death: Those who fight the Lord’s battles can rest assured that they will never truly die. Christ guarantees us eternal life!
No Fear of Loss: The only ultimate losers in this cosmic war are those who refuse the cross and align themselves with the defeated adversary.
We march forward in victory to conquer darkness, to win lost souls to Jesus, and to guard the new life we have received in Him.
And how does the war end for the faithful soldier?
The Bible promises a crown; the Crown of Life; for those who endure unto the end (James 1:12, Revelation 2:10).
And then; and only then; will we enter into the final Rest of the Lord.
Scripture speaks of a Sabbath rest that remains for the people of God (Hebrews 4:9). Rest is not something you indulge in during the heat of the conflict; rest comes at the end of the battle! Our warfare ends when we make heaven our home, when we lay our swords at the feet of our Redeemer, and hear those blessed words:
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”
CONCLUSION AND ALTAR CALL: ANSWERING THE CALL
Church, the battle cry is sounding today. The King is calling for soldiers.
- Will you continue to settle for a diluted, comfortable, “ticket to heaven” religion?
- Or will you step onto the battlefield, count the cost, pick up your cross, and follow the Commander of your salvation?
If you have been sitting on the sidelines, if you have dropped your spiritual armor, or if you have never truly surrendered your life to Jesus Christ; today is the day of decision.
Lay down your self-sovereignty.
Take up your cross.
Put on the full armor of God.
Let us march out into this dark world, winning souls, snatching captives from hell, and advancing the glorious Kingdom of God until Jesus comes again!
