Chapter Two
The World’s Groan: Signs of the Times
A World in Turmoil
Beloved, take a moment to pause and reflect. If you turn on your television or scroll through the endless feeds of social media, what do you see? In a world that often feels engulfed in turmoil, where the clamor of distress and disquietude surrounds us like a heavy fog. Nations are at odds, the shadows of lawlessness loom large, and a moral decline is evident in every facet of our society. Romans 8:22 tells us, “For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains like childbirth until now.” These labor pains of this world are not mere happenstance; they are the very echoes of a creation yearning for its Creator, intensifying as we approach the glorious return of our Lord.
Christ, in His infinite wisdom, has forewarned us of these times. As we lean into His comforting embrace, we hear Him speak through the Gospel of Matthew, reminding us: “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6-7). What a tender reassurance amidst the tremors of our world! Our Savior is on His throne, sovereign overall, and He calls us not to fear but to stand firm in faith.
First, let’s take heed of the realness of His warning. Jesus speaks plainly of the conflicts and unrest that will mark the last days. Yet, in the same breath, He offers peace: “See that you are not alarmed.” In the original Greek, this phrase invites us to stand fearless and unwavering, to trust Him rather than cower in fear.
Secondly, we must remember that these troubling events “must take place,” fitting perfectly within God’s unbreakable plan. Every movement of the earth, whether calm or chaotic, unfolds under His watchful eye. When we anchor our faith in this truth, we can breathe easily; we can choose faith over fear. Even as the headlines scream of upheaval, we know our Redeemer reigns.
Finally, let us hold fast to His words: “but the end is not yet.” These signs, though alarming, are not the final curtain. We are called to action: to pray, to preach the Gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit, and to love one another fervently. Each day we are given on this side of glory is a precious gift, an opportunity to shine the light of Christ into the darkest corners of our world.
So, take heart, dear family! When the rumors of war swirl around you, stand strong in the peace of Jesus. Allow His presence to calm your spirit. Use these stirring times to draw closer to Him, to encourage your brothers and sisters, and to share the hope that propels us forward. Even Tho the earthquakes, our souls stand secure in the Rock of Ages. May the Lord fill you with unshakeable confidence and a love that shines brighter than any shadow of fear. Amen.
Global Famines and Pestilences
Let us turn our hearts heavenward and lend our ears to the gentle yet urgent whisper of the Holy Spirit. Across the globe, we witness the birth pains of the last days: fields laid waste by drought, storehouses emptied by war and economic collapse, and communities ravaged by outbreaks of disease. These tragedies are not mere statistics; they are the signs our Lord Jesus spoke of in Luke 21:11: “There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences.”
1. A Call to Watchfulness and Prayer; Jesus warned us so that we would not be taken by surprise. He longs for His children to remain alert, not fearful. As weary as the world may seem, our God is still on His throne. Let us gather in prayer, interceding for those who suffer hunger and sickness, asking our compassionate Father to send relief, to strengthen weary bodies, and to quicken spiritual eyes to see His redemptive purposes, even amidst the storms.
2. Compassion in Action; The famine of the body calls us to feed the hungry; the pestilence of the spirit compels us to share the Bread of Life. In the power of the Holy Spirit, let us mobilize our churches to host food drives, support relief missions, and visit the sick. Every loaf of bread offered, every moment spent at a bedside, is an act of worship that echoes Jesus’ own heart for the hurt and helpless.
3. Hope That Anchors the Soul; Though mountains tremble and epidemics rise, our hope stands firm in Christ. Revelation 21 paints the glorious picture of a new heaven and a new earth where suffering is wiped away. Until that day, we carry within us the promise that He is making all things new. Let that living hope energize our voices, our hands, and our feet as we bring healing in His name.
4. Proclaiming the Gospel in Dark Days; Famines and pestilences are signposts pointing to our greatest need: a Savior. Let us boldly declare the name of Jesus, the Healer, the Provider, the Prince of Peace. Through every broadcast, every prayer meeting, and every neighborhood outreach, may the fragrance of Christ’s love be unmistakable. As the apostle Paul reminds us, “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26). We are the body of Christ, called to share both its burdens and its blessings.
Dear family, these unsettling times are not without divine purpose. They awaken within us a fervent dependence on our Heavenly Father and compels us to shine His light into every dark corner. May we stand firm, clothe ourselves in compassion, and carry forward the Gospel with passion and tenderness, knowing that our faithful God will bring hope, healing, and ultimate victory to a hurting world. Amen.
Hear the Word of the Lord! Truly, “we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains like childbirth until now” (Romans 8:22). The signs of our age are unmistakable: wars and rumors of wars, famines, pestilences, moral decay, and earthquakes in diverse places (Matthew 24:6-7; Luke 21:11). These labor pains intensify as we approach the glorious return of our Bridegroom, Jesus Christ. Today’s message is a solemn warning to the unprepared and a clarion call to the faithful: watch, pray, and be ready, for we know not the day or the hour (Matthew 24:42-44).
1. The Certainty of Christ’s Return “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me” (Revelation 22:12). He who promised will do it: “God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:9). The Lord Himself declared: “This generation will not pass away until all these things take place” (Matthew 24:34). The shaking world around us testifies that His arrival is near.
2. The Imminence of the Rapture “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command…and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive…will be caught up…to meet the Lord in the air” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). No timetable but God’s: “Of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels…nor the Son, but the Father only” (Mark 13:32). Therefore, He exhorts us: “You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Luke 12:40).
3. Signs of the Times: A Call to Watchfulness Wars, famines, pestilences, earthquakes (Matthew 24:6-7; Luke 21:11). Moral lawlessness abounding, love growing cold (Matthew 24:12). Deception of false Christs and prophets (Matthew 24:24). Yet, “the gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14).
4. The Urgency of Repentance for the Lost “God is patient, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). If you have never bowed the knee: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord…and believe in your heart…you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Today is the day of salvation. Do not harden your heart (Hebrews 3:15).
5. The Calling of the Bride: Holiness and Watchfulness “Let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love…and for a helmet the hope of salvation” (1 Thessalonians 5:8). “Therefore, let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:6). Christ’s promise to the overcomer: “I will clothe him in white garments, and…his name will never be blotted out of the book of life” (Revelation 3:5). Live holy: “You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand” (James 5:8).
6. Faith That Perseveres “And we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings…knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope…” (Romans 5:2-4). In trials, look up: “Lift up your heads, for your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:28). Cling to the promise: “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:24).
7. Exhortation to Prayer and Biblical Vigilance Jesus pleaded, “Watch and pray that you may not enter temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) so your lamp never runs out of oil (Luke 12:35-36). Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
8. A Final Word to the Lukewarm The Spirit says to the church in Laodicea: “I stand at the door and knock…If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him…” (Revelation 3:20). He warns: “I will spit you out of my mouth” if you persist in being lukewarm (Revelation 3:16). Today, choose fervent devotion; leave your indifference behind.
Conclusion
Beloved brothers and sisters, let us draw near with hearts aflame, for the sighs of creation are growing louder, echoing through every corner of this weary world. Our glorious Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, is at the door, and the sound of His coming trumpet may pierce the heavens at any moment (1 Corinthians 15:52). Are you ready to meet Him?
1. Persevere in Holiness God calls us to a life set apart. Pursue purity of heart and conduct, for the Lord is holy, and He will one day soon present His Bride without spot or wrinkle. Surrender every thought, every desire, every hidden corner of your life to Him. Walk in the light as He is in the light, that the blood of Jesus continually cleanses you (1 John 1:7).
2. Abide in Watchful Prayer Keep your lamp trimmed and burning. Pray without ceasing. Stir up the gift of God within you, keeping your spirit alert to the movements of the Holy Spirit. Let your prayers be fervent and unceasing, for the enemy prowls, seeking to steal, kill, and destroy. But greater is He who lives in you!
3. Fan the Flame of Fervent Love. Love one another deeply, from the heart (1 Peter 1:22). Let compassion flow like rivers of living water. Forgive as you have been forgiven, serve as you have been served, and be swift to encourage and build up the body of Christ.
4. Stand in Hopeful Endurance. Trials may come, storms may rage, but our hope is anchored in heaven. We fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith. Joyfully endure, knowing that a crown of life awaits all who love Him (James 1:12).
And if you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus, hear His gentle yet urgent invitation: “Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). Tomorrow is not promised. “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts” (Hebrews 3:15).
Step into the new birth
- Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Repent of your sins and turn completely toward God.
- Be baptized in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins.
- Receive the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, who seals you and empowers you for victorious living (Acts 2:38; John 3:16).
To the eager Bride who watches and waits, gird your loins with truth, keep your lamps filled with oil, and rejoice, for our redemption is near! Let every heart cry out, “Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20). Amen.
A Call to Look Up
“Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:28)
We are living in extraordinary days, unlike any other in the tapestry of human history. With each passing moment, we edge ever closer to the glorious fulfillment of God’s promises, standing at the very threshold of history’s grand culmination. The words of Jesus resound across the ages, reverberating with urgency and hope: “Look up! Lift your head! Redemption is at hand!” These are not merely words for ancient listeners, but a clarion call for us, His Church, in this very hour.
The world around us trembles with uncertainty. Nations rage, and rumors of war swirl in the air. The earth groans beneath the weight of natural disasters and calamities. The fabric of society seems to be fraying as moral confusion and persecution increase. Yet, my dear brothers and sisters, let us not be swept away by fear or despair. Let us remember these are not signs of defeat, but the very birth pangs our Lord Jesus foretold (see Matthew 24:6–8; Mark 13:7–8). They signal that the return of our King is drawing ever nearer!
Now, more than ever, the Holy Spirit compels us to lift our eyes above the turmoil and fix our gaze upon Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. This is the moment to shake off discouragement and rise with holy expectation! We are not called to cower in dread, but to stand tall in the confidence of our redemption. Our Bridegroom is coming for His beloved! The trumpet is poised to sound, and the marriage supper of the Lamb awaits those who are watching and ready.
Are you prepared to meet your heavenly Bridegroom? Have you trimmed your lamp and filled it with oil? The Spirit is inviting us to a deeper intimacy, a bolder faith, and an unwavering hope. Let us be a people who eagerly anticipate His glorious appearance, shining as lights in the darkness, filled with the fire of His love.
Lift your head! The King is coming soon. Let faith arise, let hope to anchor your soul, and let the Spirit empower you to stand firm until the day when we behold Him face to face.
May these words stir your heart and ignite a fresh longing for His return!
