A. Call to Readiness
The Urgency of the Hour
Beloved in Christ, as we gather in His name, I implore you to listen with open hearts and attentive spirits. The hour is critical, and the urgency of the message cannot be overstated. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is coming again! This glorious truth is both a promise and a warning. In Matthew 24:36, Jesus declares, “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” This divine mystery should compel us to remain vigilant, prepared, and filled with anticipation.
In our current age, distractions abound, and the spirit of complacency threatens to overshadow the truth of His return. The world may be preoccupied with its pursuits, yet the church must be awake, sharply aware of the signs of the times and the call to readiness.
The Signs of the Times
We are living in the days foretold by the prophets and echoed by our Lord. In Matthew 24:4-8, Jesus describes the beginning of sorrows: wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes. We see these signs manifesting around us. The global upheaval, the moral decline, and the increase of lawlessness (Matthew 24:12) remind us that we must not grow complacent or lose heart.
The Apostle Paul, too, warns us in 1 Thessalonians 5:2-3: “For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, ‘There is peace and security,’ then sudden destruction will come upon them.” The world may claim peace, but we know the truth, our Savior’s return is at hand.
The Call to Readiness
As we await His return, we must heed the call to be ready. In Matthew 25:1-13, Jesus shares the parable of the ten virgins, illustrating the necessity of preparation. Five were wise, taking oil for their lamps, while five were foolish and unprepared. When the bridegroom arrived, only those who were ready entered with Him to the wedding feast. The door was shut, and the foolish virgins were left outside, crying, “Lord, open to us!” (Matthew 25:11).
The message is clear: there is an urgency to our readiness. We cannot afford to be caught off guard (Mark 13:33). The Apostle Peter exhorts us in 2 Peter 3:10-11 that “the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved.” Knowing this, we ought to “live lives of holiness and godliness.”
The Condition of the Heart
Preparation is not merely external; it begins in the heart. In Matthew 24:12, it states that “because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” This coldness can seep into our hearts if we are not vigilant. We must examine ourselves regularly, ensuring our hearts are aligned with His will, that we are filled with His love, and that we are actively engaging in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).
The Apostle John gives a poignant reminder in 1 John 2:28: “And now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears we may have confidence and not shrink from Him in shame at His coming.” We must abide in Him, cultivating a deep relationship with Christ, allowing His Spirit to transform us into His likeness.
The Promise of His Return
The return of Christ is not merely a threat but a promise, a glorious assurance that our faith will be fulfilled! John 14:3 captures the heart of this promise: “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” This hope should ignite in us a fervor to spread the Gospel and to encourage others toward readiness.
In Titus 2:13, we are reminded to look for “the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” Our eyes must be fixed upon Him, for He is our hope in a world that is in turmoil.
The Warning to the Lost
To those who do not know Christ, I implore you: heed the warning! The return of Christ is imminent, and to be unprepared is to face eternal separation from Him. Revelation 20:15 says, “And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” This stark truth compels us to share the love of Christ boldly and unashamedly, for today might be the day.
In Romans 10:9-10, Paul outlines the path to salvation: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” There is still time to turn to Him, to seek His mercy, and to embrace the gift of eternal life.
Conclusion: Live in Readiness
As I conclude, let us remember that the return of Christ is both a joyous expectation and a solemn warning. We must be vigilant, living lives that reflect His love and grace, engaging in prayer, studying His Word, and reaching out to the lost.
The time is short; the signs abound, and we cannot afford to be unprepared. Watch, pray, and remain ready for His return, for today may be the day. Let us declare with certainty and urgency: Jesus is coming soon! Are you ready? Are you watching? Let us live in the light of that glorious hope, continually prepared for our Groom’s return. Amen.
