To the Thessalonian church, grappling with the fate of deceased believers, Paul lovingly reassures them: “We who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep” (1 Thessalonians 4:15). The language of “rapture”, being “caught up…to meet the Lord in the air” (4:17), infuses urgency and hope into each moment of our lives. He warns, however, of the “man of lawlessness” whose revelation precedes Christ’s descent (2 Thessalonians 2:3–4), reminding us that every era of spiritual decay is but a prelude to divine intervention.
