The Imminent Return of Christ: Chapter Six

Chapter Six

A Sacred Admonition to Those Who Rest Unready

Listen closely to the gentle yet urgent plea of our Lord and Savior, who, in boundless compassion for our souls, shared the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1–13). Picture ten young bridesmaids, their faces alight with expectation, waiting beside the lampstand for the Bridegroom’s arrival. Yet when the trumpet sounded and the midnight hour came, only five had kept their lamps trimmed and their vessels full of oil. The other five, though outwardly indistinguishable, found themselves undone, scrambling in vain for fuel, only to stand on the wrong side of the closed door.

What a solemn warning for us today! It is far too easy to rest on the comfortable routines of religion, attending services, reciting prayers, singing familiar hymns, while failing to nurture the living fire of the Holy Spirit within. Such outward devotion, admirable though it may appear, cannot substitute for the divine flame that alone sustains us through life’s darkest nights. The oil speaks of the Spirit Himself, our constant Comforter, our unfailing Guide, the very seal by which we are marked as Christ’s own.

Imagine your lamp flickering in the silence of that solemn hour. There is no time then to kindle Christ’s warmth afresh by human striving alone. You must have embraced Him before the shadows deepened. You must have asked, “Fill me, Lord, with Your Spirit until I overflow,” while there was yet time. Otherwise, you risk the agonizing moment when the Bridegroom utters the piercing words, “I do not know you.”

Hear, then, the loving urgency in His voice: “Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” (Ephesians 5:14). This is no call to hollow fear, but to holy awakening. Cry out for more of Him. Despise not the day of small beginnings, but press in, ask, seek, knock, for the fullness of His presence now. Do not be satisfied with the shadow of godliness; pursue the blazing reality of His Spirit in your heart.

In the book of Revelation, the Lord commends the church of Philadelphia: “Because you have kept My word of patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming upon the whole world” (Revelation 3:10). What a promise! Yet it is tethered to our perseverance, holding fast the trust He has placed in us, guarding our crown of rejoicing with undiminished devotion. We are seated at the brink of glory, yet we must stand firm against the lures of compromise, the lure of comfort, the lure of an easy faith.

Ponder the grave admonition to the lukewarm Laodiceans: “Because you are neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth” (Revelation 3:16). How heartbreaking it must be to Him when our zeal grows tepid, when we tiptoe along the fence between the world’s pleasures and Christ’s costly call. Our Savior longs for those ablaze with holy passion, souls whose every word and deed radiate the love of God, whose very lives bear witness to the transforming power of the Spirit.

Dear friend, the clarion call echoes now: “Behold, the Bridegroom is coming!” The midnight hour grows near. Will your lamp shine brightly? Will your heart be steadfast and pure? Do not wait for a more convenient season, for the door may one day be shut. Step forward today into the blessings He pours out without measure. Invite the Spirit to fill you anew, overflowing into every corner of your being, so that you may join the triumphant song at the wedding feast.

Weep not afterward in regret; rejoice now in His presence. Let the fire of His love burn in you so fiercely that the world around you will know without doubt that Jesus Christ reigns. Cast aside all that hinders. Cling to Him alone. Run in the appointed race with eyes fixed on the eternal glory to come. The Bridegroom is here come, let us welcome Him with lamps ablaze!
